Ooty in October and November: Weather, Rain and Trip Planning

Ooty in October is cool, green and often wet. The India Meteorological Department's 1991–2020 averages for Ooty put October rainfall at 189.2 mm, more than any other month, with days around 19.0°C and nights around 10.6°C. November is a little drier at 144.5 mm, with similar days and slightly colder nights.

• Why it rains: the northeast monsoon season runs from October to December, and its normal onset date over coastal Tamil Nadu is 20 October.
• Travel risk: heavy rain has stopped the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and blocked ghat roads in recent Novembers, so keep a spare day.
• Holidays in 2026: Ayudha Pooja and Vijayadasami fall on 19–20 October, and Deepavali is on Sunday 8 November.
• Driving up: the official ePass portal is taking applications for trips to the Nilgiris, so apply before you leave.

Is October a good time to visit Ooty? Yes, if you want cool weather and green hills and can live with showers. If you need dry, clear days for every sight, November is the safer of the two months.

Ooty Weather in October vs November

The two months feel alike during the day. The difference is rain: October is wetter, and November nights are a little colder. The figures below are long-term averages from IMD's Udagamandalam (Ooty) weather station, with May added because it is the month most people compare against.

October: the wettest month on the calendar

It is easy to think of October as "after the monsoon". The IMD record says otherwise: at Ooty's station, October gets more rain on average than July. Expect cool, damp days, fresh green slopes and a good chance of rain on any given day.

One useful pattern from the same IMD tables: in both months, skies are on average less cloudy at the 8:30 AM reading than at the 5:30 PM reading. That is why we suggest doing viewpoints first thing and keeping afternoons flexible.

November: drier, with colder nights

November has fewer rainy days than October and its average low drops to 9.6°C. Daytime highs barely change. For most visitors this is the easier month for sightseeing, though the northeast monsoon can still bring heavy spells.

The Northeast Monsoon in the Nilgiris

The northeast monsoon is the reason October and November are wet. IMD defines its season as October to December, and it is the main rainy season for Tamil Nadu.

• Timing: the normal onset date over coastal Tamil Nadu is 20 October. In 2024 it set in on 15 October.
• How much rain in the Nilgiris: IMD's normal October–December rainfall for the Nilgiris district is 501.3 mm.
• Year-to-year swings: IMD notes that northeast monsoon rainfall varies a lot from one year to the next.

For live warnings in the days before you travel, check the IMD Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai and the Nilgiris district website. If a heavy-rain warning covers your travel day, move the drive rather than push through.

Ghat Roads, the Toy Train and the ePass

The main risk in these months is not the cold. It is heavy rain on the ghat roads (the steep hairpin roads up the hills) and on the mountain railway.

What has happened in recent Novembers

• November 2023: landslides and mudslides hit 10 places on the Coonoor–Mettupalayam and Kotagiri–Mettupalayam highways. Traffic on the Mettupalayam–Coonoor route was halted for a time and motorists were sent via Kotagiri.
• November 2023: toy train services between Mettupalayam and Coonoor were suspended until 16 November 2023 after rain and fallen trees on the track.
• November 2024: Nilgiri Mountain Railway services were cancelled on 3 November 2024 after a landslide blocked the track.

Things to Do in Ooty in October and November

The classic sights are all worth your time in these months. Plan the outdoor ones for mornings and keep a shorter list than you would in May.

• Government Botanical Garden: a 55-acre garden in town. Its annual flower show is held in May, so an autumn visit is about lawns, trees and the fern house rather than show displays. See our Botanical Garden visitor guide.

• Doddabetta Peak: about 10 km from the Ooty bus stand, and described by the district as the highest peak in Tamil Nadu. Go early, while skies are more likely to be clear. Details are in our Doddabetta Peak guide.
• Pykara: the falls are about 20 km from Ooty and the lake, with boating, about 21 km out on the Ooty–Mysore road. After heavy rain, view the falls only from the marked viewpoints.
• Avalanche: about 28 km from Ooty through forest. Access runs through forest areas, so confirm the current arrangements with the Forest Department or our travel desk before you set out.
• Nilgiri Mountain Railway: the 46 km metre-gauge line is part of UNESCO's Mountain Railways of India World Heritage Site. Check that it is running on your date, and read our toy train booking guide.

Planning Calendar: October–November 2026 and a Diwali Trip

Use the holiday dates to decide when to go. School and office holidays create long weekends, and long weekends mean more cars on the same hill roads, so book rooms and train seats early for these dates.
